This cultural treasure-trove museum originated in 1928 as a way of housing the incredible collection of art and objects that belonged to the former Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, as well as the other convents and churches in Guimarães.
It is located in the old historic core of Guimarães, where Countess Mumadona once ordered a monastery to be built in the 10th century.
The Museu Alberto Sampaio is a treat for history buffs and art lovers, with a wealth of exciting pieces and artefacts. Look at the sculpture composed of statues from the 13th to 18th centuries, made from limestone and wood.
The textile section is also notable, featuring examples of traditional ecclesiastical clothing. One of the most extraordinary pieces in the museum is a tunic that once belonged to Dom João I and was worn at the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Since 1910 it has been classified as a National Monument and World Heritage Site since 2001.
