The Sanctuary of Sameiro originated in 1863 when a well-known priest by the name of Martinho da Silva placed the first stone on top of a hill so that its construction could begin.
Years later, in 1870, in this same place, a chapel was built, but due to its modest size, the construction of the current and so well-known Basilica was then projected in 1890. The last work of expansion was the construction of a crypt to receive and shelter the pilgrims who came there. To reach the basilica, there is an ascent of more than 265 steps, a staircase flanked by two statues of the Virgin Mary and a representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Sanctuary of Sameiro is also known as the highest point in Braga, where you can enjoy one of the city's most incredible and panoramic views.
