Like a jewel in a crown, this ornate church sets the tone for the square of Largo da Oliveira around it. This gorgeous structure was designed by the master architect Garcia de Toledo, dating from the end of the 14th century.
Over the years, it grew, eventually where the Santa Maria de Guimarães Collegiate was founded. It was protected by Guimarães Castle and was one of the wealthiest and most prestigious institutions in the history of the town.
Walk up the stone steps, worn by centuries of sandals, and enter the interior where your eyes will be drawn to the high altarpiece dating back to the late 18th century.
At the end of the 17th century, the church was enlarged by Dom Pedro II, and his coat of arms can be seen on the lofty vaulted ceiling.
Pay close attention to the lovely details that were invested in the creation of this building - admire the 17th-century choir stalls and the gleaming silver altar of the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament.
