The Geira, also known by the name of Via Nova or Via XVIII of Antonino's Itinerary, is a military road built during the Roman period that connected Braga (Bracara Augusta) to Astorga (Asturica Augusta), stretching over a distance of 318 km (or 240 Roman miles).
This trail, which starts at Portela do Homem, situated on the Spanish border, runs along one of the best preserved Roman roads in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is 30 km of an almost intact ancient road that crosses this area (specifically between miles XXVII and XXXIV).
As you travel along this millennial trail, you will pass by several bridges, walls, houses, and dozens of milestones that date back to that distant time. It was built approximately in the last third of the 1st century AD and is considered a National Monument.
