The origin of the Church of Senhora da Agonia in Viana de Castelo dates back to the 17th century. Here there was a small chapel that, over the years, has undergone several architectural works. This church is deeply connected to fishing activity, as the people used to give thanks or prayers in the most difficult moments, such as storms or shipwrecks.
Currently, the Senhora da Agonia Festival is celebrated here, one of the most famous pilgrimages of this region, celebrated the weekend after August 15. This festival includes ethnographic processions, the famous land processions ( with a religious procession with the image of the Virgin ), and river processions with decorated boats.
