The Santiago da Barra Fort, also known as Santiago da Barra Castle or São Tiago Maior da Barra Castle, is located in the parish of Monserrate and the city of Viana do Castelo.
This fort was constructed in the bar of the Lima river mouth during the reign of D. Afonso III in the 13th century. It was only in the 15th century, however, that this fortress took shape and was completed in the following century, in the reign of D. Manuel I. Some Manueline details can still be seen today, such as the "Torre da Roqueta" in the southwestern bastion of the current fortress. Its polygonal structure was already built in the late sixteenth century, during the Spanish rule, in the reign of Filipe II or Filipe I of Portugal.
