The Cathedral of Viana do Castelo is known by the names Igreja de Santa Maria Maior, Igreja Paroquial de Viana do Castelo, Sé de Viana do Castelo, and Igreja Matriz de Viana do Castelo.
This imposing church in the heart of the city of Viana do Castelo was built in the first half of the 15th century and received its cathedral designation in 1977.
Influenced by a Gothic aesthetic featuring Romanesque architecture, it is flanked by two towers with battlements. Upon entering the Cathedral, one can behold a Latin cross floor plan composed of three staggered naves with four arches. It is adorned with various religious sculptures, and inside it, there are five chapels and an altar, this one in the Baroque, Romanesque, Manueline, and Rococo styles.
