The Museu do Traje lies in the historical center of Viana de Castelo, more specifically in Praça da República.
This Museum, created in 1997 and installed in a building built between 1954 and 1958, has as its mission to study and promote the identity and ethnographic heritage of the district of Viana de Castelo through its greatest exponent: the Viana costume. These costumes from the XIX and XX centuries conquered a unique place in the culture of Alto Minho and were used in festive and religious moments and during day-to-day life. This Museum also gives access to several permanent exhibitions, which include: "The wool and the linen in the Alto Minho costume", "Vianesa costume", and the "Gold Workshop".
The Museu do Traje started its application to the Portuguese Net of Museums in 2002 and was certified in 2004.
