The Citânia de Santa Luzia, also known as Cidade Velha, is a fortified settlement from the Iron Age and Roman times. The history of these ruins dates back to the 17th century, although the occupation of this entire space is between the 8th century BC and the 5th century AD. This area is known for its strategic location, which enabled the domination of the whole coastal region and the control and supervision of the entrances and exits of the Lima river mouth.
This place has architectural characteristics, emphasising the polygonal layout used in several dwellings. These feature a circular plan with a vestibule or atrium and, in some cases, ovens for baking bread.
You will find various support infrastructures on this site, such as an Interpretation Centre and a store.
