The Mount of Santa Luzia Sanctuary or Diocesan Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located on the hill of Santa Luzia, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, in the city of Viana do Castelo.
This Sanctuary, recognized as the city's ex-libris and one of the main reasons to visit it, features some elements of the Neo-Romantic, Neo-Gothic and Byzantine periods. Its majestic structure strikes any visitor with its incredible rose windows, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and the second largest in Europe. From there, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over this entire region that stretches from the sea, the Lima river, the valleys, and the green mountains.
The ruins of the old town of Santa Luzia or Citânia de Santa Luzia, located only a few meters away from this religious complex, are another reason to visit the sanctuary.
