The Gil Eannes Ship, built-in 1955 at Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo, served for several decades as a support to the Portuguese codfish fleet in the regions of Newfoundland, the Grand Bank, and Greenland. Throughout its lifetime, this ship also performed other functions such as captaincy ship, hospital ship, mail ship, tugboat, and icebreaker.
This ship is known today for its museum space and its Youth Hostel, and It has several details of enormous importance, like the command bridge, the galley, the bakery, the engine room, the medical office, the treatment room, the radiology office, and several cabins and temporary exhibition rooms.
You will also find a Meeting Room or former Officers' Dining Room, a souvenir store and a bar/terrace.
