The Misericórdia building, located in the historic center, allows us to visit its hospital and its Church, considered one of the most beautiful churches in Viana do Castelo. Dating back to the year 1589 and designed by João Lopes, it has a strong Renaissance and Mannerist presence and Flemish and Italian influences. Due to its peculiar architectural style, it was nicknamed the "House of Balconies".
Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations that have turned this building into what we know today. From the simplicity of its exterior to the contrast of the Baroque exuberance within, this church has a single nave, where you can find: an altar with a superb work of gilded woodcarving; the frescos by Manuel Gomes, with multiple religious events; and finally, an organ that belongs to the Nordic organ lineage.
