Praça da República, previously known as Campo do Forno and Praça da Rainha is located in the historic center, in the heart of the city of Viana de Castelo.
This city is marked by Renaissance, Manueline, Baroque, and Art Deco styles, displaying in this square the main vestiges of these styles. From the ancient walls to the different secular buildings, such as the famous Praça da República fountain, from the 16th century, Renaissance style and responsible for supplying this town with drinking water for several centuries; the old town hall from the 16th century or Paços do Concelho, whose structure resembles a fort and currently houses several temporary exhibitions of contemporary art; and the Misericórdia building and its church, also from the 16th century, considered one of the best examples of the Baroque style in the whole country.
