The Paço de Giela, located in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, is considered an exemplar of several aspects of civil architecture, be it medieval or contemporary.
The origins of this place are closely linked to the formation of the important tower, which marks a new phase of lordship and royal rule over this entire region. Situated on the left bank of the Vez river, this tower has a panoramic view over the valley and lands of Valdevez. It consists of three levels: the first dedicated to the archaeology of the county, the second to the interpretation of the monument, and the third, to the famous "Recontro de Valdevez", which occurred in 1141, opposing Afonso Henriques to his cousin Afonso VII of León and Castile.
To get here, you can follow the A3 highway until Ponte de Lima and then follow the IC28 and EN101 until you reach Arcos de Valdevez. Paço de Giela is 1,5km away from Ponte Velha.
