Pitões das Júnias is a parish in the municipality of Montalegre and is considered one of the highest villages in Portugal, with an altitude of 1103 m.
This village, one of the most visited in the municipality of Montalegre, located in the National Park of Peneda-Gerês, is known for its history, traditions, fauna, and flora. This place is widely known for its waterfalls, the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria das Júnias that now lies in ruins, and its proud population to preserve all its cultural heritage.
From this village, start several trails of Gerês, with different levels of difficulty, where you can appreciate the rural architecture, especially regarding agriculture, historical and religious monuments, and the breathtaking views over the National Park of Peneda-Gerês. There is also the possibility of staying overnight in mountain shelters.
