Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Peneda

It's in Nossa Senhora da Peneda, in the parish of Gavieira, municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, that we can find the imposing Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda.

The construction of this space dates back to the late eighteenth century and mid-nineteenth century, where there’s clear evidence of a hermitage that dates back to the thirteenth century. Legend says that on August 5, 1220, there was an appearance of the Virgin, Nossa Senhora das Neves, in the shape of a white dove, to a shepherd girl. The Virgin is said to have requested the shepherd girl to build a hermitage on that site.

Today, this Sanctuary is composed of the main church, the virtues' staircase, the great terrace, the evangelists' terrace, its 20 chapels, and the square of the Angel S. Gabriel. Lastly, you will have access to the main gateway, with the image of Our Lady of the Incarnation.
