The Torre da Cadeia Velha in Ponte de Lima, together with the Torre de São Paulo, is considered the last traces of what was once the ancient medieval wall. This whole set of defensive characters was built during the reign of D. Pedro I in the fourteenth century.
The Torre da Cadeia Velha was converted into a prison in the 16th century, during the reign of D. Manuel I. The Tourist Shop is currently located, as well as several temporary exhibitions. When you visit this space, you can see the monumental structure that once existed through the vestiges of the old towers and walls and their respective marks.
The São Paulo tower consists of a terrace crowned by merlons and cannon gargoyles on each of its faces. The side facing the Lima River presents a tile panel allusive to the Reconquista.
