In Ponte de Lima, we can find the Igreja Matriz; even though its construction took place at a time when the Gothic was in significant expansion, we can observe that this church stands out for its Romanesque trait. This detail is also noted in some areas of northern Portugal.
The origin of Igreja Matriz dates between the XII and XIII centuries, in the place where a temple of small dimensions already existed. It was then in the 15th century, thanks to João I of Portugal and the regent D. Pedro, that the works of enlargement of the church took place, having these been finished years later in the reign of D. Manuel I.
Over several centuries, it underwent several interiors and exterior transformations, which gave rise to the space we know today. In May 2013, due to its historical importance, it was classified as a monument of public interest.
