Rua de Santa Maria

Deep in the heart of Guimarães you will find this little narrow street - a medieval walkway that connects Largo do Carmo and Praça Oliveira. This quaint little street has been where the city's elite used to live for many centuries.

It was one of the first roads to be constructed in Guimarães. It contains some interesting and important architectural elements, including the Convent of Santa Clara, the Arch House, the Santiago Square and the House of Aries.

It has been designated a UNESCO Heritage Site and these days it awakens in the evenings with cosy restaurants and lively pubs.

The best time to stroll down is in the early morning or the evening when there will be fewer tour groups and you will have this picturesque street with its lovely facades.
