Largo do Toural

This picturesque square is a beautiful place to start exploring the old town. It is packed with history - containing some of the oldest traditional shops in the city, some more than 100 years old.

The atmosphere here evokes the medieval past, but also features the broad and spacious public areas designed by the urban planners of the 18th century Enlightenment.

Be sure to note the small chapel of Senhora da Ajuda at the end of the street, with the date of 1600 carved into the stonework.

You can also visit the Museu Martins Sarmento, which has an impressive collection of archeological artefacts. Or, sit for a moment to people-watch and take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful historic square.
